Amritsar, January 12

Congress activist Sandy Randhawa today alleged the involvement of a senior official of the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) in facilitating the “illegal” construction of hotels. He said a local hotelier, who has been facing the charges of sexual assault, has constructed three hotels “illegally” with the help of Rajiv Sekhri, Superintending Engineer (SE), AIT.

According to Randhawa, Sekhri is a business partner of the hotelier.

Referring to some documents he accessed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Randhawa alleged that there was no provision of getting a shop-cum-office (SCO) converted into a hotel through the change of land use (CLU) facility. “AIT SE Rajiv Sekhri passed the plan of HK Clarks hotel by violating the rules. The hotel owner has encroached upon a considerable portion of land in front of his hotel on the name of maintenance and has been using it as parking lot,” he alleged.

Sandy Randhawa stated that H-52, another resort of the same hotelier, was “illegal”.

“I demand an SIT probe into it. The involvement of AIT officials should also be investigated. I have adequate proof about the wrongdoings of Sekhri. Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu should conduct an inquiry and dismiss Rajiv Sekhri. The government can recover more than Rs 100 crore from the violators if they investigate the irregularities by building owners and AIT officials,” he added.

When contacted, Rajiv Sekhri rubbished the allegation. “The plan of HK Clarks has been passed under the mega project scheme of the government. The hotelier got approval for maintenance of the parking area. We have taken action against H-52 hotel by sending a notice to it,” Sekhri maintained.

“Sandy Randhawa is a blackmailer who seeks money from AIT officials,” he added.
