Govt to assist farmers for plantation

Amritsar, February 12

Under the National Forest Policy, the Forest Department has announced to foot 50 per cent of the expenditure incurred by farmers in planting tree saplings on the edges of their fields.

Deputy Commissioner KS Sangha said, “The government with an objective of increasing the forest cover in the state has been encouraging farmers to plant saplings and pay for their maintenance for the initial four years.”

He hoped that the farmers would show interest in planting saplings as it would stop soil erosion after turning into mature trees. They will also help in combating with environmental pollution.

District Forest Officer Rajesh Kumar Gulati said the scheme would cover the saplings planted only before March 31. He said the farmers could avail the scheme after submitting relevant documents of their land and identity proof at the offices concerned.
