Bathinda, January 13

Barely two days after the MC beautified and put up flexes at the fruit market on the Mall Road, protests have erupted against the name given to the market. The MC beautified the market to secure good marks in the ongoing Swachhta Survey 2018.

Members of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and the Dal Khalsa today raised objections against naming the fruit market as Indira Fall Bazaar. They raised slogans against the MC and demanded that the name be changed.

Parminder Singh Ballianwali of the SAD (A) said, “The memories of what happened in 1984 in the state are still fresh in the minds of a large number of people of the state. Naming the market as Indira Phal Bazaar is not acceptable to us. This may spark more protests.”

Meanwhile, MC officials said the name was not decided by it, but this name was given to the market more than two decades ago when it was originally set up. Fruit market president Bobby said the vegetable market, which is adjacent to the fruit market, is also known as Indira market. Fruit sellers told the protesters that the MC had put up the flexes on its own and didn’t consult them. — TNS
