Vendors fleece passengers at rly station

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 16

Passengers at the city railway station are being fleeced by vendors at the city railway station, who are charging them above the maximum retail price (MRP) mentioned on the mineral water bottles.

According to sources, the vendors stationed at the city railway station are selling the mineral water bottle at Rs 20 against the MRP of Rs 15. The issue has been raised by passengers a number of times but railway authorities have turned a blind eye to the ill-practice that continues unabated.

However, bottles of soft drinks and mineral water are purchased by retailers at wholesale prices, which even help them to make profit even after adjusting cost of electricity. Besides, the companies also provide them several schemes.

During a visit by the Bathinda Tribune team to the city railway station, it learnt that most vendors increases the prices of mineral water and other items at night.

Pleading anonymity, a vendor, said, “Actually we are not gaining healthy profit. The main profit is being gained by the retailers who distribute them the mineral water bottles. Retailers purchase a single mineral water bottle for Rs 8.2 and they are selling it for Rs 13 to us and then we further resell at Rs 15 to passengers. In these circumstances, to recover the cost of electricity, some vendors sell the mineral water bottle at Rs 20.” Commercial Inspector MR Khan confirmed that after receiving complaints from passengers, they have removed one vendor.
