Woman succumbs to injuries, husband arrested

Bathinda, May 16

A woman resident of Chak Ruldu Singhwala village, who was beaten up by her husband five days ago, died while undergoing treatment at the PGI in Chandigarh on Tuesday night.

Earlier, the police had registered an attempt to murder case against the accused husband, but after the death, the police have added section of murder in the FIR and have arrested the accused. Accused Chanan Singh had hit her eight month pregnant wife Ramandeep Kaur in the head with a baseball bat.

After hearing the victim’s screams, neighbours informed the police about the incident. She was taken to the Civil Hospital from where she was referred to the PGI as her condition was serious.

In a statement given to police, victim’s father Binder Singh, a resident of Ganga village, said his son-in-law Chanan had assaulted her daughter with a baseball bat due to which she sustained injuries.

He added that his son-in-law was unemployed and his daughter used to ask her husband to do some work to make both ends meet, which led to a dispute between them.

Even a few days ago, she had left her husband’s house and had come to his house. The issue was resolved in the panchayat and she again went back to her husband’s house. — TNS
