New Delhi, October 9

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the aluminium industry to import pet coke for use in manufacturing process, meeting a long-pending demand of the industry.

A Bench headed by Justices MB Lokur allowed the aluminium industry to import 0.5 million tonne calcinated pet coke a year on the basis of recommendations made by Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) which said the industry needed a particular grade and structure of pet coke for use in the manufacturing process.

The EPCA highlighted the fact that there was dearth of calcinated pet coke in India. There are four aluminium manufacturers in India with a combined production capacity of 4 million tonne a year. The Bench passed the order after it was told the aluminium industry has stipulated emission norms for NOx and Sox.
