Patiala, June 14

Patiala boy Jayesh Singla bagged the all-India rank 17th in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced exam, the result of which was declared today. With 299 marks out of 372, he topped the north zone.

There are two steps for selection in the IITs — JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Jayesh had scored 100 percentile in the JEE Mains and was among the first 15 from 8.74 lakh students who took the exam.

The 18-year-old, a student of Apollo Public School here, said hard work and time management did the trick.

Talking to The Tribune over the phone, Jayesh said, “I used to set daily targets and work on them. The study pattern helped me a lot. I did not feel the burden of syllabus.”

Talking about his preparation for the test, Jayesh said he did not study for long hours. “Just four-five hours of coaching and three-four hours of self-study were my routine. I think students should start giving equal importance to self-study as it plays an important role,” he added.

Jayesh, who did his Class X from Yadavindra Public School and scored 97.4 per cent marks, said he had a keen interest in computer science and aspired to become a computer scientist. “I have planned to take admission in computer science engineering. I will go for the IIT-Bombay,” he said.

Fond of cricket, Jayesh said even when he was preparing for the exam, he would keep track of IPL match scores. “I used to check the scoreboard on my phone in between my studies as I didn’t have a TV at my accommodation in Chandigarh. Now, I will watch the remaining World Cup matches,” he said.

Yatin Jindal of Sri Guru Gobind Singh School, Sector 26, scored 95.8% in Class XII.

He wants to pursue BTech in computer science. His father Sanjeev Kumar is a chief manager in Allahabad Bank and mother Deepika Gupta is physics lecturer at GMSS-19.

Anirudh Gupta did his Class XII from Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula, with 94.2% marks

He suffers from haemophilia, a medical condition in which blood does not clot normally. Excessive bleeding occurs after every injury. Overcoming disability, he did his parents proud.
