The Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) has prepared a blueprint of 85 illegal colonies that continued to extend their boundaries after their identification in 2012.

The MC had exempted land owners in the colonies from seeking no-objection-certificate (NOC) for construction of houses but had not identified their boundaries.

The colonies include Bazigar Basti, Ranjit Nagar A, Ravidas Nagar, Virk Colony, Dashmesh Nagar, Anand Nagar, New Officer Colony Khalsa Nagar, Dhiru ki Majri and Nawa Bishan Nagar, among others.

As per the civic body records related to a decision taken in its General House meeting in 2012, the development works in the colonies were carried out from the MC’s revenue and the areas were adjusted in the Patiala Local Planning Area proposed land use plan 2009-31.

The MC in its meeting had stated that reports were being prepared on roads in the colonies and facilities to be provided and added that it would be appropriate to issue construction plans. This was after the government had stopped issuing construction plans in all the colonies in the state.

As a result, the colonisers incorporated outside areas as a part of their colonies and got construction plans cleared without seeking the NOCs.

Patiala MC Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khaira said, “Boundaries of the colonies have been identified and marked on the map.”

He said, “We have marked the boundaries of illegal colonies and have started using it for identifying exact location of plots. We will be using them for our convenience. Information is also available for general public.”
