Youth held with 7-gram heroin

Chandigarh: The police have arrested a youth while possessing seven grams of heroin. According to the police, the suspect has been identified as Baljit Singh (26) of Sector 28. The police said the suspect was arrested from near the Bapu Dham Colony light point. A case has been registered. TNS

5 arrested for stealing truck

Ambala: The police have arrested five persons for stealing a truck from near Baldev Nagar petrol pump in September 2016, officials said here on Friday. While Sulinder Singh, alias Chhinda, of Kurukshetra who is presently putting up in Sangrur was arrested and sent to two-day police remand on Friday, four of his accomplices had earlier been arrested in the case, the police said. According to the police, Amritpal Singh of Radaur in Yamunanagar had reported to the police that his truck was stolen on September 13, 2016. TNS

15-yr-old girl goes missing

Ambala: A 15-year-old girl has reportedly been missing from her house in Maheshnagar here since June 12. According to the police, the girl’s mother had reported to the police that her daughter had left the house on June 12 but did not return. The police have lodged a missing report and launched a manhunt to trace her. TNS

Jail inmate held with batteries

Ambala: Gagandeep, an inmate at the Central Jail here, was arrested with 3 mobile phone batteries. Central Jail Deputy Superintendent Vivek Sangwan reported to the police that during routine checking, the inmate was found possessing three mobile phone batteries. A case has been registered. TNS

268 violators challaned

Ambala: Under its drive against traffic violators, the district police have challenged 268 more vehicle drivers for violating the traffic rules, the police said here on Friday. According to the police, 130 traffic violators were issued e-challans while 17 were challaned for overloading, 35 for speeding and 86 were issued challans for various other traffic violations. TNS

Driver found dead in car

Mohali: The police found a taxi driver lying dead in his vehicle under mysterious circumstances here on Friday. The victim has been identified as Pradeep Singh from Zira, Punjab. The engine and the AC of his car were on when he was found dead in his vehicle around 3 pm at Phase 6 here. The police believed that it could be a case of inhalation of some gas in the car. The body has been shifted to the Civil Hospital at Phase 6 here where post-mortem would be conducted on Saturday. TNS

Tennis C’ship from today

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association will organise CLTA-AITA National Ranking Tennis Rs 2 lakh Championship (men and women) from June 15 to 21, here. The qualifying matches of both the events will be played on June 15 and 16, followed by the main draw matches. A total of 182 players have signed-in for the qualifying round of this event. TNS

PEFI Members meet minister Sodhi 

Chandigarh: A delegation of the Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI) met Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, today. It was proposed to hold a two-pronged strategy for tackling this problem in Punjab. As part of this strategy, a clinic for coaches/physical trainers of the schools, colleges and universities will be held at Mohali, next month. The training will be carried out on the scientific lines and would be conducted by the experts of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and PEFI with the support from the state sports department. In August, a seminar will be held to spread awareness on the toll of doping on sportspersons .TNS

U-23 cricket team announced

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to Punjab) has announced the U-23 squad for the upcoming inter district tournament, starting from June 18. The selected players will report on June 15 at 7.30 am at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36. Squad: Arjun Azad, Jagmeet Singh, Raman Bishnoi, Pradeep Yadav, Ayush Gautam, Lakshey Rakhra, Bhagminder, Amit Shukla, Ayush Sikka, Gursukhan, Arshdeep Singh, Jagjit Singh, Mandeep Singh, Nipun Pandita, Nikhil, Akash, Jaskaran.  TNS

Badminton meet  from June 28 

Panchkula: The Sports Promotion Society will organise the first Tri-city Badminton Rs 5lakh Championship, under the aegis of Haryana Badminton Association, at Sector 3 Tau Devi Lal Stadium from June 28 to 30. Shuttlers from the tri-city will be eligible to participate in the men’s and U-19 category. The interested players can confirm the entries with the secretaries of their respective district associations. The society will also organise the 14th Ashwani Gupta Memorial Badminton Championship from July 5 to 7 along with a marathon. TNS
