Newly married woman ends life

Amritsar, June 9

Perturbed over alleged harassment at the hands of her in-laws, a newly married woman committed suicide by hanging herself. The victim has been identified as Harmeet Kaur.

Among those booked are her husband Lovejit Singh, alias Labha, his brother Sarabjit Singh, alias Sabha, and father Baljit Singh, all residents of Patti Pandora in Sultanwind village.

The police have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC in this connection while no arrest has been made so far.

Ranjit Kaur, mother of the victim and resident of Chheharta, said Harmeet Kaur was married to Lovejit on April 17 this year. She alleged that a few days after her marriage, she was harassed for “bringing insufficient dowry”. On Saturday, her family received a call from Lovejit who informed about Harmeet’s death. She, along with her relatives, rushed to her house and found her lying on bed in the corridor. Her body had strangulation marks around her neck. The complainant said Harmeet ended her life after facing harassment at the hands of her in-laws.

ADCP JS Walia said no arrest had been made as the matter was under investigation. — TNS
