Finally, water in Sirhind Canal was released after 10 days on Wednesday. Farmers have heaved a sigh of relief as they will start transplanting paddy on June 13.

Notably, officials had stopped releasing water from the canal for few days, leaving residents and farmers perturbed.

They were of the view that canal water was not clean for the use so it was stopped. But, farmers had alleged that officials deliberately stopped water as the state government did not want to provide water for paddy transplantation before June 13.

The government did not want that farmers to start paddy sowing in advance so as an anticipatory measure, it had stopped the supply of the canal water so that they could not use the water for irrigation, said farmers.

Earlier, farmer unions had announced that they would hold a protest against the government if the canal water was not released on June 12.
