Chandigarh, June 9

Three years after dismantling old structures for makeover, the Chandigarh Administration has issued the tender for the construction of 496 bus queue shelters which will have many new features to meet the norms of the Smart City mission.

An officer of the Engineering Department said the bus queue shelters would be constructed on a build operate transfer (BOT) basis. The company will construct the shelters, operate and maintain them for next 10 years, and then transfer them to the administration.

The company would earn revenue through advertisements displayed on the bus queue shelters. The Tribune has highlighted the plight of the commuters due to the delay in the project

The Administration had dismantled more than 300 bus queue shelters made of stainless steel in November 2017.

Since then, the departments concerned, transport, engineering and architecture, had failed to come up with a common design of new bus queue shelters.

Sources said the new design had been prepared to match the intelligent traffic system to be adopted by the CTU. The new bus queue shelters will also have the provision for the parking of cycles under the cycle-sharing scheme. They will also have the feature of LED display of bus timings.

The sources said while around 245 bus queue shelters will be built afresh, the remaining will be refurnished.

The administration is planning to construct new shelters by using both concrete and steel. These will not only last long but will also be in consonance with the architecture design of the city. A model of new bus queue shelters has been prepared at Sector 17.

To be in tandem with City’s architecture

  • Design to match the intelligent traffic system (with LED) by CTU
  • Provision for parking cycles under the cycle-sharing scheme
  • 245 bus queue shelters to be built afresh, rest to be refurnished
  • Both concrete and steel will be used for the construction
  • Design to be in consonance with the architecture of the city
  • To be constructed on a build operate transfer (BOT) basis
