Kharar, June 14

The vehicular traffic came to a halt for around one hour when workers of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) staged a dharna at the Kharar bus stand chowk today. They also burnt effigies of police officials. BSP workers were protesting against officials of the Majat police post, whom they alleged were responsible for the death of Surmakh Singh, who committed suicide on May 13.

The BSP leaders alleged that the deceased had complained to officials of the Majat police post against two persons, but no action was taken. Fed up with no response he committed suicide, they claimed.

Protesters said if the police had taken timely action the deceased could have been saved. They also alleged that when BSP leaders met the Kharar SHO regarding complaint he misbehaved with them.

The BSP workers burnt effigies of police officials and demanded action against them. They lifted dharna after the DSP, Mohali, Raghbir Singh, assured them that proper action would be taken in this regard.
