DSGMC ex-president backs kirtan by women

New Delhi, November 8

Manjit Singh GK, former president  of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), has said the women should be allowed to perform kirtan in Sri Darbar Sahib, but it should be decided by Akal Takht Sahib, not by the Punjab Assembly.

He said he was in favour of women doing kirtan ardas,  but termed the resolution of the Punjab Assembly as a direct intervention of the Congress government in the religious affairs of Sikhs. Only the Akal Takht Sahib and the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) should decide.

On allowing other TV channels to broadcast the ‘Gurbani’ from Darbar Sahib, Manjit Singh GK said all Punjabi channels should get the right to broadcast ‘Gurbani’ and supported this proposal of the Punjab Assembly as this proposal directly negates the hegemony of one channel.

Last month, GK broke away from the Akali Dal and and formed the ‘Jago-Jag Asra Guru Ott’ party. — TNS
