Yamunanagar, January 18

Additional Sessions Judge Dr Abdul Majid has awarded seven-year jail to seven persons, including two policemen, for extorting Rs 4 crore from a businessman in Chandigarh, falsely accusing him of rape.

Policemen Mahender Singh of Bhiwani and Mahavir Singh of Jind, Varun Gupta of Yamunanagar district, Mahima Kadiyan alias Mahima Hooda of Rohtak, Ram Niwas of Jind and Sunil Dutta alias Gullu of Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) have also been fined Rs 3.97 lakh.

In her complaint, Mahima Kadiyan of Rohtak had claimed she and her brother went to Yamunanagar along with Ajay Bansal, proprietor of Kala Emporium Private Limited, Chandigarh, in connection with a property deal on May 12, 2012. She alleged she was raped by the businessman in a hotel who drugged her by giving her a soft drink laced with some intoxicant.

Subsequently, a case was registered against Bansal under Sections 376 (rape), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc, with intent to commit offence) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Bansal's uncle Jai Chand lodged a counter complaint, stating they had been doing business with Sonu Bansal of Yamunanagar since 2010. He said a girl visited their showroom on April 26, 2012, and introduced herself as “Mrs Hooda”. She expressed interest in purchasing land.

She was shown a 172-acre site in Dhanaura village on April 27, 2012, and a deal was struck for Rs 30 crore.

He said Bansal and Mahima visited the tehsil office of Bilaspur in Yamunanagar for the site plan on May 2, 2012. But it was not available with the patwari. Thereafter, they went to a hotel for rest. Jai Chand said at about 4 pm, Mahima Kadiyan told Bansal that her husband was in Hansi with the earnest money. As the two reached a resort in Hansi, a policeman in uniform with three or four others arrived there.

Accusing Bansal of kidnapping and raping Mahima, they forced a “compromise” in lieu of Rs 20 crore. On May 4, 2012, a sum of Rs 4 crore was transferred from Bansal’s account to that of Sonu Bansal via RTGS. A police probe revealed the money was shared by seven persons. On May 2012, the police scrapped Sections 328, 376 and 506 in the FIR on finding that the facts mentioned by complainant Ajay Bansal were true.

These typical traits of this inclusive community are bound to generate stereotypes about them.

  • Reading the Ramayana, differently

Seeing those large and extensive series of paintings that used to be produced in India once — not in the north alone, like Rajasthan or the Hills, nor in known groups of styles, like Rajput or Mughal, for instance — one often wonders who constituted the ‘audience’ for those.

  • A brave new narrative

A year before #MeToo wave swept India, a known name from Delhi’s theatre circuit, Shilpi Marwaha, had raised a finger at top theatre director Arvind Gaur.
