Anti-encroachment drive: Cops lathicharge villagers

Yamunanagar, June 12

The police used mild force to disperse a group of villagers when they allegedly attacked a team of the district administration, which had gone to remove encroachments from the Municipal Corporation land in Shadipur village on Tuesday.

In the afternoon, the team of Jagadhri tehsildar Darshan Kumar, MC officials and police officers went to the village to remove huts raised on MC land. When villagers learnt about the team’s visit, they started protesting.

The tehsildar said the team tried to persuade the villagers, but they attacked members of the team and damaged an earth-moving machine. In retaliation, the police had to use mild force to disperse the villagers, he said. A woman was hurt.

The team had to suspend its drive for some time as villagers blocked the Shadipur-Panjupur busy road. They lifted the blockade after Jagadhri SDM Bharat Bhushan Kaushik warned that action would be taken if anyone tried to break law. Later, all encroachments were removed in the SDM’s presence. “Action will be taken against people who attacked the team,” the SDM said.
