Kaithal, March 20

A sweets manufacturing unit at Shiv Nagar here was destroyed completely in a fire that broke out in the wee hours of Monday. It took five fire tenders at least six hours to control the fire.

The owners of the unit, Joginder Singh and Sarjit Singh of nearby Rehriyan village, claimed that they suffered a loss of Rs 40 lakh due to the mishap. Not only the stock lying at the factory was destroyed but the building also suffered extensive damage, they claimed.

Police and forensic teams reached the spot to ascertain the cause of fire.

The owners said their neighbour noticed billows of thick smoke rising from the factory and informed them on phone. They, in turn, informed Fire Station staff at about 4 am.

Fire fighters faced difficulties in reaching inside the building due to thick smoke and had to demolish one of the walls to gain entry. The fire was brought under control after six hours of operation.
