Yamunanagar, March 20

An SIT of the Yamunanagar police has arrested two officials of the Forest Department, including a Deputy Range Officer of Himachal Pradesh, for helping smugglers in smuggling khair wood.

Officiating in-charge of the CIA Staff-II, Naresh Kumar Sharma, who also heads the SIT, said they had arrested Tarsem Singh, Deputy Range Officer (DRO) of Paonta Sahib Forest Division of Himachal Pradesh, and Maan Singh, forester of Kalesar area in Yamunanagar district, on March 18.

Sharma said the Forest Department of Yamunanagar district had seized a vehicle loaded with illegal khair wood on February 26 last year and parked it in its office. He said logs of wood were without hammer marks (stamp of the department). However, the accused forester put the hammer mark on these with the help of a smuggler. He added that the hammer marks were put only on logs of khair wood, which were procured after completing all legal and Forest Department formalities. He said Tarsem Singh also helped the smugglers to make the said seized khair wood legal.
