Panchkula, April 16

Gangster Bhupesh Rana was shot dead by rival Bhupi Rana gang members in Barwala, near Panchkula, on Monday morning.

Bhupesh Rana along with friends was going in his car to perform religious rites in the memory of his ancestors when the assailants travelling in a Maruti Swift car fired seven bullets at him near the Shiv temple at Barwala. Bhupesh, who was a key member of the Monu Rana gang, was out on bail in the case of murder of Zirakpur resident Mushtak, who was a key member of the Bhupi Rana gang.

On a complaint by Bhupesh Rana’s family, the Panchkula Police registered an FIR under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC against Bhupinder Singh, alias Bhupi Rana, a resident of Handesra in Mohali, who is the kingpin of the rival gang, besides his gang members Gaurav Rana, a resident of Barwala, Sahil Rana and Rinku, both residents of Ambala, and Ashok, alias Shonky.

According to information, Bhupesh Rana along with his friends Neeraj and Prince were going in his Alto car when rival gang members travelling in a Haryana number Maruti Swift car stopped them. Within seconds, they started firing at the Bhupesh Rana’s car. Bhupesh Rana tried to escape but attackers shot him in the leg, chest and head and he died on the spot. His friends ran towards a nearby primary school and took shelter there. However, as villagers started gathering there, the attackers fled.

Later Bhupesh Rana’s family members and villagers did not allow the police to lift the body and blocked the Barwala bypass. Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta and senior district administration and police officers reached the crime place. The protesters blocked the road for nearly three hours and lifted the blockade only after an assurance of strict action against the attackers.

Panchkula Police Commissioner AS Chawla sent Barwala police post in charge Ram Mehar to the police lines, as Bhupesh Rana’s family alleged that they had informed him two days ago about the threat to Bhupesh’s life. Chawla said the attackers would be arrested soon. The police have kept the body at General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where post mortem will be conducted tomorrow.
