Cop caught taking bribe

Tribune News Service

Solan, January 13

A head constable, Mohammad Khalid, was caught taking a bribe of Rs 100 at the Kala Amb inter-state barrier last evening.

Rohit Malpani, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sirmaur, had received reports that the head constable was demanding Rs 100 from motorists. A trap was laid by a team of senior police officials led by ASP Dr Monika and he was caught red-handed. Malpani said a case under Sections 13 (1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, had been registered against the head constable. He would be produced in a local court later in the evening.

Several cases of police irregularities have come to the fore in the last one week and the SP’s strict action has been lauded by the residents.

The SP had also raided a police station in Nahan three days ago in the wee hours and took the staff to task for having put the receiver of the telephone off the hook in a bid to ensure that no calls were received.

While continuous complaints of unavailability of telephone number 100 were being received by the SP, an early morning raid helped check the laxity of the staff.

As a punitive measure, salary of the munshi concerned has been deducted.

The SP also suspended two policemen, who were caught in an inebriated condition in a PCR van at Paonta Sahib a few days ago. DGP SR Mardi said there would be zero tolerance to corruption.
