Woman attempts self-immolation

Kangra, April 20

A 33-year-old woman, a resident of Paiga village falling under Gaggal police post, today tried to immolate herself following mental and physical torture committed on her by her in-laws, the police said here today.

Kangra Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Surinder Sharma said Arpana was married to Bhim Singh of Paiga village five years ago and did not have any issue from this marriage. He said recently her sister-in-law had an issue and the mother-in-law and husband Bhim Singh started torturing Arpana mentally and physically for being issueless.

The SDPO said Arpana sprinkled kerosene on the body at her home today and set herself on fire and received 85 per cent burn injuries. He said her husband, who had tried to douse her flames, also received 45 per cent burn injuries. Both have been rushed to the Tanda medical college for treatment.

He said the police registered a case under Sections 498-A and 34, IPC, and started investigation. No one has been arrested in this connection till the filing of this report.
