Shimla, November 8

Handloom, bakery and other products manufactured by jail inmates, which are on display at Dilli Haat, INA Market, New Delhi, from November 1 to 15, are receiving an overwhelming response. A huge rush of Indians and foreigners could be seen at the stall.

“It is for the first time that a wide range of products by Himachal jail inmates such as shirts, caps, shawls, mufflers, kurta pajama, sadri, bakery products, furniture and articrafts are being showcased at Dilli Haat. The response is so good that 50 per cent of the stock was sold in the first two days.” said DG (Prisons and Correctional Services) Somesh Goyal.

“We took the initiative to display the products at Dilli Haat as it has an ideal location with a huge footfall of people, including foreigners,” he said, adding that they got to understand the market requirement and what the customers looked for.

Handwoven shawls, caps, kurta pajama and sadri are in great demand as the winter is approaching. The collection is of pure fabric and very economical.

“I loved the variety and colour choice in kurta pyjama and half jackets,” said Nicloan, a British tourist.

The turnover of products manufactured by the inmates in various jails across the state was Rs 3.28 crore in 2017-18. Wages to the tune of Rs 1.4 crore were earned by 3,000-plus inmates.
