Akalis term CM’s promises a farce

Jalandhar, April 14

Leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) termed Saturday’s commitments made by Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh in Jalandhar as farce. The CM today gave a debt waiver of up to Rs 50,000 each for beneficiaries of Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation and Punjab Backward Classes Land Development and Finance Corporation.

Chief whip of the party Pawan Tinu said, “We still ask the CM as to where is his total loan waiver promise made to the farmers. Even the new loan waiver for the Dalits that he announced today is just up to Rs 50,000. This means that if there is an SC whose loan stands at Rs 90,000, he still will have to pay Rs 40,000 from his own pocket. How can this be karza mukti?”

SAD spokesperson Tinu further said, “The loan that the CM has waived is only for Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation. You will be able to find one such beneficiary in four villages. There will be just one beneficiary in a population of 5000. So, I do not think it will serve much of a purpose.”

He went on to demand that the state government should have considered the waiving of study loans of poor children which would actually come as a real service on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti.

Tinu also blamed Congress chief Sunil Jakhar for putting onus on the Centre for not handing over its Rs 1,700 crore share for the SC Post Matric Scholarship scheme. “When the state has taken a year to disburse the Rs 115 crore amount and did not even send the utilisation certificates in time, how could the Punjab Government expect the next instalment. The Congress is just trying to befool the masses,” he said.

The Congress leaders, who were already expecting Akali reactions by the evening, had said in the day, “Have they ever thought of waiving a single rupee for the poor. Now that the Congress has begun doing it, they are in such a hurry. Loan waiver takes time and we have already begun the process.” Congress ministers Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Charanjit Channi had taken up the matter during the function at DAVIET this afternoon.

Tinu expressed his concern over the incident at Ferozepur where a Civil Hospital doctor misbehaved with a Dalit woman. “It does not behove a doctor to act in such an unruly manner as seen in the viral video,” said the leader.
