The Phagwara Superintendent of the Police Mandeep Singh has launched an awareness drive to sensitise people against the drug abuse and encourage them to share information about drug peddlers in their respective areas.

The police have already made a beginning on the social media platform with Phagwara police spreading the message to fight against drug abuse.

Talking to The Tribune, Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Satinder Singh said: “We will put up posters in the district, spreading the message among people to shun drugs and display the phone numbers on which they can share any information about the sale of drugs or movement of drug peddlers.”

“The campaign shall make the people aware of drugs and also help us tighten the noose around the drug smugglers,” he added.

He said the posters would have the contact numbers of the police control room, besides some WhatsApp numbers.

“We shall rope in Drug Abuse Prevention Officers (DAPOs) as well as common people in the campaign. Any individual having any information about the supply of drugs can share the same on the given contact numbers,” added the SSP.

The SSP said: “The police shall not only pass on the information to the police station concerned but also keep a track record on the action initiated on it, adding that we shall maintain the record of the information shared by the DAPOs as well as common people,”

He said they would also have mobile vans, which would tie-up with the village panchayats to hold awareness drives with the help of interactive sessions, posters and street plays.

“The aim behind the move is not only to fight against the drug abuse but also work in the field of rehabilitating addicts and motivating youngsters to stay away from drugs,” said the SSP.

He said the state government had recently kicked off the DAPO programme under which thousands of volunteers were enrolled in each district. Police-public meetings are being organised in Phagwara and several surrounding villages falling in Phagwara subdivision.

“These meetings are being addressed by SP Mandeep Singh; SP Investigation Manpreet Singh Dhillon; DSP Manjit Singh; and SHOs of all police stations falling in the Phagwara subdivision, including City SHO Vijay Kunwar and Satnampura SHO Onkar Singh Brar,” added the SSP.
