The death of two-year-old Fatehveer Singh after being trapped in a borewell in Sangrur has failed to wake up the civic administration over similar death holes in the city.

There are several open sewage disposals in the city, which have not been covered for years.

The disposals with depth up to 30 ft are common, especially in the old city areas. The disposals, such as those in Beant Singh Park and near DAV College have been posing huge risk, especially since they remain full with sullage all the time.

The death of a child after falling in an uncovered sewage disposal at Bhagat Singh Colony last year too did not awake the civic authorities.

As per norms, these disposals have to be covered with a lid or an iron mesh or even fencing can be done around them.

Jalandhar North Congress MLA Bawa Henry said, “Though such open sewer disposals are everywhere in the city, I will get the issue sorted out by tomorrow.”

He added that renovation of Beant Singh Park and six other parks in the area was underway through the Smart City project.
