120 girls get training in ice hockey at Leh

In all, 120 girls in the U-18 age group was provided free training in ice hockey and ice skating during a 10-day camp at the Gufuk ice-hockey rink, located 7 km away from Leh. The camp concluded with a valedictory function held on Thursday.

Basic, intermediate and advanced training was imparted to the participants as per their skills and knowledge about the sport. The camp was organised by the Ladakh Women Ice Hockey Foundation (LWIHF) from January 2 to 11 with the aim to promote ice hockey and ice skating among girls.

Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Sonam Dawa Lonpo was the chief guest while the Deputy Commissioner and the Chief Executive Officer of LAHDC Avny Lavasa were the guests of honour.

The event was part of the initiative of the LWIHF and Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) for the promotion of ice hockey in rural areas.

An exhibition match between the teams of the LWIHF and SECMOL and speed-skating races were among the several events organised on the occasion.

Sonam Dawa assured to provide 4 to 10 kanals for constructing an ice-hockey rink near Leh.

Sonam alsp announced Rs 1 lakh for the LWIHF to carry its activities to promote ice hockey and assured to earmark a budget for the same in the district plan in the coming years.

“Moreover, a three-member councillor committee of the LAHDC, headed by Khalsi councillor Lobzang Sherab, was recently formed to look into the issues of the sportpersons of the district,” he added.

Meanwhile, nominated woman councillor of LAHDC Rinchan Lhamo also announced Rs 1 lakh from her constituency development fund in favour of the LWIHF.
