Srinagar, October 11

Secretary, Social Welfare, Cooperatives and Tribal Affairs, Farooq Ahmad Lone on Thursday chaired a meeting of officials of the tribal affairs department to review the construction of Eklavya Model Residential Schools and development of the cluster tribal model villages in the tribal areas of the state.

Lone told the meeting that the Centre had approved 16 cluster tribal model villages for the current financial year for the benefit of the Scheduled Tribe population in the state.

In the last two financial years, the Central government had sanctioned 17 cluster tribal model villages in 13 districts — Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, Kupwara, Leh, Kargil, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Kathua, Budgam and Kulgam.

It was given out that the Centre has sanctioned five Eklavya Model Residential Schools in Anantnag, Kulgam, Rajouri, Kargil and Poonch districts to provide lodging and boarding facilities and education to the ST students free of cost. Each Eklavya Model Residential School will accommodate around 480 students.

The Secretary, Social Welfare, informed the meeting that Eklavya Model Residential Schools in Anantnag and Kulgam were near completion and were expected to be functional in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools in Rajouri, Kargil and Poonch are under construction and will be completed in a time-bound manner, Lone said.

The five residential schools are being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 72 crore.
