High drama in SKIMS over Director’s post

The SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) witnessed high drama when two senior doctors assumed the role of Director of the institution in separate rooms.

Dr AG Ahangar, who was removed from the post of SKIMS Director by the government last week, joined his office on Thursday after the High Court put a stay on his attachment with the General Administration Department (GAD).

Ahangar’s happiness, however, was short-lived as the state government on Thursday evening appointed Dr Omar Javaid Shah as the interim director of the institution. While Ahangar stayed in the office of Director, Shah started work from the office of the Joint Director.

Both doctors were garlanded by their loyalists and stayed in the office for a long time. The issue became the butt of jokes at SKIMS and outside.

“For the first time, we have two Directors for SKIMS. One is for the day and another is for the night, both with abundant experience,” joked a senior faculty member.

The governing council meeting of the SKIMS was also held in Jammu under its chairperson, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, on Friday.

Officials say the governing council meeting was convened to initiate the process for the appointment of the new director of the SKIMS. However, they said the governing council gave its consent to the appointment of Dr Shah as the interim director.

Dr Ahangar was removed from the post on Saturday by the state government after three senior doctors of the SKIMS were found indulging in private practice, which is against the rules of the institution. The government put the three doctors under suspension and also removed Dr Ahangar from his post.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Doctors Coordination Committee (JKDCC) – an amalgam of various bodies of doctors - castigated the government for allegedly making a “mockery” of the judicial system. “The appointment of Dr Shah as the interim director of the SKIMS is nothing but a move to disrespect the entire judicial structure of the state,” said spokesperson for JKDCC Dr Mir Mushtaq.

Mir said the government action “without any justification” was uncalled for and had hurt the dignity of doctors. The resident doctors of SKIMS are on strike from the past four days, seeking the reinstatement of Dr Ahangar.
