A few days after Hizbul Mujahideen posters calling for poll boycott surfaced in Gurmul and Dandal area of Doda district, the police rounded up several persons for questioning even as the security has been beefed up in the area.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shabir Malik said, “We called several suspects, including a soldier of the Territorial Army, for questioning in connection with surfacing of the Hizb posters in the area.”

“We have collected samples of their handwriting. We are sending these to the Forensic Science Laboratory for matching it with the posters. Earlier, we rounded up around 12 photostat operators from the area for questioning,” he added.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Gurmul residents also called on the SSP on Tuesday, demanding a proper investigation in the case.

A Gurmul resident said, “There is no fear of militancy in the area. We want the police to investigate the case properly as it looks more like a handiwork of locals. In Gurmul, so far 12 persons have filed nominations for the posts of panch. Three women have also filed papers for the post of sarpanch (reserved seat).”

Ghulam Hussain Sheikh, former sarpanch, Dandal, said, “We were not afraid even when the militancy was at its peak in Doda. This time, too, we will contest the elections without any fear.”
