AIP won’t contest byelections

Srinagar, March 20

The Awami Ittihad Party (AIP) led by firebrand legislator Engineer Rashid today announced that the party will not participate in the upcoming parliamentary byelections for the Anantnag and Srinagar seats.

“There is a huge trust deficit between the mainstream parties and the people, who have been the worst victim of state terrorism. Under such manipulated atmosphere, it would have been proper not to conduct elections at this stage,” Rashid said during a press conference here.

He said the AIP strongly believes in democratic process and the available forums, including the Assembly and Parliament are the best places to plead Kashmir cause.

The byelections for the Srinagar and Anantnag Lok Sabha constituencies are scheduled to be held on April 9 and 12, respectively. — TNS
