Tribune News Service

Srinagar, June 13

Minister for Finance Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Wednesday said the process was on to rehabilitate the people living along the banks of the Jhelum so as to free them of encroachments once and for all.

The Finance Minister said this while reviewing the relocation process of the people living along the banks of the river. He said the work was going on a war-footing basis to give a one-time relief to the people living along the Jhelum in Srinagar so that the banks could be beautified and strengthened to avert any tragedy.

He directed the officials to ensure that no structure comes up on either side of the river after the dwellers are rehabilitated properly.

Bukhari directed the Department of Irrigation and Flood Control to complete the left-out work of landfilling at the Bemina bypass near SKIMS within 15 days. He asked the vice-chairman of the Srinagar Development Authority to ensure the plots for the beneficiaries were demarcated within a week after landfilling was completed.

He said the families living along the Jhelum in Srinagar and the families living in houseboats would be relocated to identified plots at Bemina and the possession of the plots shall be given to the identified families at the earliest.

The minister directed the officials to expedite the process so that the families could be relocated on time.

It was decided in the meeting that the Sub-Committee already constituted for the verification of details of the left-over families shall verify the list of beneficiaries by the month-end for further processing.
