SPO, minor sister shot at in Shopian

A Special Police Officer (SPO) of the J&K Police and his sister were shot at by unidentified gunmen at their home in Katho Halan village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district around 9.15 pm on Wednesday.

The SPO has been identified as Rayees Ahmad Lone. His 12-year-old sister was shot in the leg.

A senior police officer from Shopian confirmed the incident.

“The incident took place around 9.15 pm in Katho Halan village of Shopian district,” the police officer added.

The police officer said the brother-sister duo were shifted to District Hospital, Shopian.

“The SPO has been shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment. He is in a critical condition,” the officer said.

The SPO’s injured sister is being treated at District Hospital, Shopian, and is stable, health officials said.

Following the shooting, security forces cordoned off the area and conducted searches to trace the attackers.

“The attackers seem to have fled. The searches are nevertheless going on,” the police officer said.
