Srinagar, June 13

Thousands of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers continued to protest across Kashmir on Wednesday in support of their demands, including implementation of the 7th Pay Commission report.

Two days ago, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti directed the authorities to resolve the issues of the protesting teachers and release their salaries.

Education Minister Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali had also appealed to the teachers to avoid taking to streets as their demands were being considered.

“The government has shown indifferent attitude towards teachers. They are still not showing any seriousness,” said a protesting teacher. The teachers tried to hold a sit-in near the civil secretariat on Wednesday. However, the protest was foiled by the police. Many protesting teachers were bundled into police vans and detained at the Shaheed Gunj police station.

“Many of our representatives are lodged in the police station. We were not allowed to stage a sit-in outside secretariat and were cane-charged by the police,” said J&K Teachers Forum president Abdul Qayoom Wani.
