A smart choice

A smart choice

Abhishek Agarwal

Beyond investors, capital, ideas, and infrastructure, a team of diehard achieves is the ultimate need of every business. These are the people who convert those stakes into profit making assets of the organisation and help it in beating all sorts of competition and challenges in both micro and macro environments. But, without a right trainer, the importance of a company's most valuable resources is no more than a herd of junk. It is the trainer who notices the potential strengths and weaknesses of each employee and shares them with the management to utilise the human resources in the best way; the optimum conversion of manpower into productivity and profit. The foresight, intellect, and experience of a trainer hone the talent and make them ready to contribute their best to the organisational growth. This is the reason behind the growing demand of corporate trainers in today's business world.

Scope of taking up corporate training as a profession

With the needs of training and development growing in organisations, companies have been increasingly hiring trainers to do the job. Trainers train employees on subjects that were not covered in their formal education. With an increase in the skill gap both in entry and middle-level jobs, in-house training has become a very popular phenomenon. Trainers have the option to work in corporations, training consultancies or even as freelance trainers who brand their own self to make money. Globally, it is one of the highest paid professions, and after acquiring a good recognition in the market, one can earn handsome amounts. Money rains once you get noticed.

Skills that a corporate trainer can never skip

Corporate training is the game of professional skills and if one is willing to a distinct niche in this area, he/she must have to work very hard on refining the personality, especially the interpersonal skills. He/she must behave like a resilient champion, an influential leader, a disciplined and punctual soldier, an impressive boss, an intelligent manager, and above all, a very practical person. Having extraordinary communication skills, confidence coupled with excellent presentation skills is essential to be successful in this career. Attention to detail, strong researching skills, and a quick aptitude to learn new concepts is a must. Trainers also need to have a significant ability to engage with a large group of unknown people and use tricks and methods to get their message across effectively.

Pathway to becoming a corporate trainer

Identify your expertise: It should be noted that due to a number of disciplines in which employees need to be trained, a trainer can only specialise in one field. Technology, Marketing, Sales, Finance, Human Resource Development, and Languages are a few subjects that one can specialise in. So, mark your field of interest to pursue your career in.

Earn a degree in the identified field: Having a formal education in one's chosen subject gives him/her the basic support to establish credibility in a particular field. In addition, a certificate programme in corporate training from a recognised business coach/leader makes one highly sought-after in the corporate sector.

Earn hands-on work experience in your field: Since in-depth subject knowledge is a core requirement of being a trainer, you should take up a job in the previously identified field. Working as an assistant to a known trainer in the early years of career brings countless long-term benefits.

Strengthen your communication and presentation skills: One must continuously seek out for opportunities where he/she may develop the communication and presentation skills. And, it should be a continuous process because without impressive communication and presentation skills one cannot survive for a longer duration in this industry.

Take up training courses: Training yourself to be a trainer is the next logical step towards your goal. Enrolling on one of the various "Train the Trainer" courses out there would make you ready to make a breakthrough into your dream job.
