Boost that low self-esteem

Stop the comparison game

  • “No matter how many people you overtake on the highway of life there will always be someone ahead of you!” This is true for all. People with low self esteem tend to keep looking at people who are better and invariably sink deeper into the quicksand of depression. Simply focus on getting better than before, period!
Boost that low self-esteem

'Self Esteem' is definitely not an unfamiliar word — however whether it is high or low is the crucial factor. Featuring high on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it is needless to say that it is of paramount importance. Nobody is born with a low self esteem issue, which obviously means it is picked up during the journey. The good news of course is, what was picked up can be dropped!

With a sustained effort low self esteem can not only be addressed and arrested, but can be changed to ‘high self esteem’. Some effective strategies to do this are:

Awareness: The first and foremost rule to follow is to be aware that it is a temporary phase even though it may last for weeks, months or even years. Remember, you were not born with it! People tend to create identities and strong impressions like “I have a low self-esteem” and end up strengthening that belief. Once, Akbar asked Birbal to quote him a sentence which can turn a happy person sad and a sad person happy. Witty Birbal replied, 'This time too shall pass'. But yes, the difference is, we are not saying “do nothing and it will pass”, we are saying “Be aware, do your bit and it will definitely pass!”

Create a series of min - success: Now this rule may look daunting to a person with low self esteem. But small doses of success are very important. So break down all your goals into simple and achievable ones. Achieve these, and do make it a point to celebrate, the brain needs to know that you are an achiever. Post this phase take the next jump!

Get your external dose: People with low self esteem normally are not surrounded with people who regularly motivate them and push them to move forward. Just be aware of your surroundings and the people with whom you spend time. You may not always have a choice of avoiding the ‘rotten apples’, but consciously make a choice to spend time with the right people. It’s high time to find a place or people where you’re nurtured, respected, motivated and inspired.

Regular introspection: It has been scientifically proven that most people operate in an ‘auto pilot mode’, be it emotions or behaviours! We all do self talk, which is not bad but the ‘contents of the self talk is crucial. People with low self esteem in an auto pilot mode do negative self talk, this pattern needs to be broken. Consciously investing 10 minutes everyday in introspecting on your daily behaviours, patterns and visualising the new behaviours can do wonders.

Self esteem simply means how worthy you think you are. Ignore the cacophony you’re surrounded with. Go for the inner calling and prove it to yourself that you have the ability to outgrow yourself. Live up to the expectations you have set for yourself and be a person you’re proud of. Introspect, Commit, Deliver!
