The ladder of success

Actor-anchor Mohan Kapoor has come a long way since his show Saanp Seedhi became a huge hit on television during the ’90s. He has not lost an inch of his cutting-edge wit though26 May 2017 | 12:32 AM

The ladder of successSCREEN SHOT: Mohan Kapoor and Kishwer Merchant

Advertising, theatre, television, anchoring, direction, script-writing, dubbing....what on earth is left that actor Mohan Kapoor, of Saanp Seedhi fame, hasn’t done!

“I still don’t own a BMW or a house,” the actor says without any pun intended. And, none taken!

Touring Chandigarh along with his co-actress Kishwer Merchant for the television show Savitri Devi College and Hospital on Colors, Mohan comes across as a very humble soul. “I know I was popular with the show Saanp Seedi in 1990 and this was it,” he says calmly, as he locates words to add to it...“the only brief I was given for the show was be yourself and don’t use abusive language.”

Big show

Talking about the show, he says, “Mine was a game show; this is reality show that you are talking about, something like Bigg Boss. Here you must understand that prior to putting the contestants together, complete research is done and then a stimulus is added, which makes them react in a certain manner. Bigg Boss to me is like a work of post-production genius,” adds Mohan, who also mentions the time that he sat home waiting for good work.

Being honest

The actor, who has an advertising background and has dabbled in theatre as well, knows when to hold back and when to give suggestions. And if it doesn’t work accordingly, “Well then I say chalo do paisey, batao kahan khadna hai aur kya bolna hai.”

His words bring a soft smile on the faces of everyone around; the same words bring us face-to-face with a man who has seen the peak of success and now accepts everything else graciously. “I was lucky to be one in the world of one. Then one day a saas bahu serial worked well and next thing was everyone else was making saas bahu sagas. Everything in these serials looks the same; right from the bindi, saris, dialogues, story and even the lighting! The best thing I have learnt as an actor is to be honest to the character,”adds Mohan.

He finds nothing wrong with the evolution of television. “I can sit for the entire day and watch the Kapil Sharma show; I can relate to the man. I know when he is impromptu, when it is scripted, when he is holding back,” the actor sounds a bit excited.

Old vs new

Though he never compares the old and the new in the world of TV, he finds the newer lot of actors in a hurry to be famous. “Where are all those big-time TV actors who once did those big shows?” We wouldn’t know about it, what we do know is of a big-time actor who once made a game show popular with his wit, intelligence and his craft. And today, he faces all the games outside the realm of TV with the same wit and intelligence!

It’s getting BIGGer

The six months after her marriage to another TV actor Suyyash Rai had been more real than any reality show! Meet Kishwer Merchant, who cooked new dishes for the hubby, waited for him to return from the shoot, till she finally declared... ‘now the cook will do the cooking and I will do some TV.’ Kishwer laughs, “Nothing changed after marriage really; earlier we were living separately, now we live together.”

Something would have changed post the reality show Bigg Boss...“I know, post Bigg Boss contestants make a lot of appearances; they try to cash-in on the new fame, but all I did was travel and travel.” She says the show did change her for good though. “I did not know I had a huge level of patience or that I was a strong person till I did the show.”
