‘Nirbhaya, wish we could give you your future back’

Divya Dutta

The verdict is finally out. To be hanged till death! The three culprits in the Nirbhaya case... The much awaited verdict…

I saw the pictures of these three men again. Normal looking people. I was aghast that they were capable of such a beastly act. How do you make out someone has such a criminal mind? They are the kind of people who are around us all the time, behind their fake exteriors, hidden personalities with a criminal mindset; with no sensitivity, and a sense of male domination.

“If a woman says no, it won’t be taken kindly. How dare she refuse? So, along with rape, add physical brutalities too. Don’t bother if it pains her, hurts her, shatters her...teach her a lesson... A girl who was leading a normal life…on her way back home... did she know what was in store for her? How life would change in a few minutes or there wouldn’t be life at all? Because a few men decided to change the fate of this young girl, to snatch away her right to live. For a few moments of their so-called fun and power play, they ended a life and so brutally!

And the Kathua case. An eight-year-old, Asifa Bano, trying to find her lost horse, didn’t know that in a few moments her childhood would be snatched by people who had not considered that she was a baby who believed in the beauty of life, whose world was all innocence. They had to teach a lesson to the community and hence the helpless defenseless child became the victim!

Do these men have any conscience? How sex starved and venomous are they? Did their families never expose them to love, kindness and sensitivity? Did they not even think once before playing fate changers of these girls?

And who are those who can even have the heart to rape a two-year-old? What lust of theirs gets satiated to cause so much pain and suffering to little innocent ones?

They surely have no right to be in the category of human beings and when their consciences have stopped working, strong examples need to be set. Strict punishments need to instill fear in these barbaric beings. I feel anger and frustration thinking of them. And the fact they live in our society, and co-exist!

Peace be to Nirbhaya. It gives me the goose-bumps to even think of the kind of trauma and pain she went through that fateful night. Didn’t she deserve a normal happy life? Didn’t she deserve a safe society? Didn’t she deserve her dreams?

Loads of strength to the mother who fought it out and somewhere feel that justice prevailed.

And qudos to the verdict. Finally! And to you Nirbhaya and many like you! Wish we could give you your futures back. Sending you peace and wishing you are born in a safer society.
