Ahead of the MC elections, residents of various areas are up in arms as roads have started peeling off within a few days after recarpeting. It has come to light that road recarpeted recently at Maharaj Nagar are in a poor shape. Residents have threatened to boycott the elections as they are unhappy with poor development.

The residents said the roads started breaking off within a few days after completion of recarpeting work. The roads were recarpeted in low temperature due to political pressure by a former councillor, who wanted to woo the voters, according to sources.

Bhagwati Devi Sharma (75) is upset with the poor quality of road construction. She said the roads recarpeted recently had peeled off and become slippery.

“The roads were recarpeted in haste. I have decided to not cast my vote due to poor recarpeting work. The MC should pay attention and roads should be recarpeted properly,” she said.

Poor shape of roads recarpeted recently at Maharaj Nagar has put a question mark over the working of civic body. An RTI activist, Rohit Sabharwal, has sought an inquiry as to how road recarpeted recently are getting damaged. “I was shocked to see the poor condition of these recarpeted roads. It is not the first time that the roads have started peeling off within days after completion of recarpeting work,” he added.

The residents of Mayanagar are also upset as a few recarpeted roads have developed potholes. The residents said the roads were recarpeted in haste and without following the requisite procedure with an eye on the MC elections.

Superintending Engineer of the MC Pawan Sharma said the contractor concerned started road work during low temperature. “We have sent a notice to the contractor in this regard and work conducted by him has been rejected. We have also written to the government in this regard. After winter, road work will be carried out again in these areas.”

Earlier, roads at Sant Nagar opposite SCD Government College had been badly damaged soon after recarpeting.
