Ludhiana, May 25

In view of increasing road mishaps being reported in the city, the Ludhiana Commissionerate has formed a Road Safety Investigation Wing, members of which will visit every road mishap spot to study the possible cause of accident.

The wing will also find the real culprit behind the road mishap and will recommend action against the same.

Police Commissioner RN Dhoke said the constitution of this unit and its study would surely lead to decline in road mishaps. “This unit also comprising the PWD officials and their inclusion means if the road mishap occurs due to the engineering fault of the road, then the same fault will be rectified immediately to prevent accidents in future. The wing will also take the help of GPS system to identify the exact accident spot, following which scientific probe will be done by the wing to inquire the exact cause of mishap,” Dhoke said.

When the CP was asked why the traffic police was not taking action against rashly driven buses and auto-rickshaws, which often become the cause of road mishaps, Dhoke said, the police had planned some stringent measure in this respect as well.

The newly formed wing team comprises ACP traffic, Engineer PWD, ASI traffic and Rahul Verma Traffic Expert.

Visible traffic violations ignored?

  • The city police have not been issuing a single challan for overspeeding, as they do not have speed radars to check the violation. Even traffic experts feel that if overspeeding is controlled, the accident ratio will automatically come down as it is the main cause of mishaps.
  • “If we cannot control the rising  violation of rashly driven vehicles, which is a must to prevent road mishap, then what is the fun of launching this exercise? Buses, auto-rickshaws care two hoots for traffic rules and cause huge traffic jams at various points in the city just to ferry maximum passengers and the traffic police do not pay heed to such violation. The only violation traffic police see is ‘helmet-less driving’ while other violations are being given secondary importance which is not a good sign,” a traffic expert said.
