Ludhiana, February 13

A third-gender person, Banto Mahant Kinner, has filed her nomination papers from Ward No. 27 of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation as an Independent.

Banto said she had been an active worker of the Congress for the past several years and had been actively working for the welfare of people of the ward (earlier Ward No. 12) as a member of the Congress. But despite her loyalty over the years, the party denied her ticket.

“But people of the ward have been insisting that I should go it alone. That is the reason I decided to contest the election as an Independent,” she said.

She said she would work tirelessly for the improvement of civic amenities in her ward. “Though I have been working hard for the ward, I will step up my efforts once I am elected,” she said.

She said her nomination would also mark a beginning to motivate transgenders to actively participate in democracy.
