Ludhiana, June 13

With railway authorities turning a blind eye, a large number of railways properties have been encroached upon in various parts of the city. Be it Dhuri track, Ferozepur track, Jalandhar-Amritsar or Delhi-Ambala track, illegal encroachments on railway’s land could be spotted everywhere.

Initially, encroachers install makeshift tents but with a passage of time they construct buildings. Other than commercial activities, land has been encroached for residential purpose as well at some spots.

Near Ludhiana railway station numerous vendors have not just set-up temporary vends but are also fleecing authorities as they do not pay any rent. Similar is the picture in nearby towns, including Mullanpur Dakha and Jagraon. Though the railway authorities launched anti-encroachment drives but the campaigns were abandoned midway.

“Every time railway authorities initiate a drive to remove encroachments, they are forced to abandon it due to political pressure. Politicians often come to the rescue of people who have encroached railway’s land,” said a senior officer of Northern Railways on condition of anonymity.

Divisional Railway Manager Ferozepur Division Vivek Kumar said, “Some people have encroached our land and constructed structures on it. We hold regular anti-encroachment drives to get back our prime properties.”
