Spirit of kindness, volunteering marks the day

Various organisations in city hold camps, highlight the merits of donating blood

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14, every year, to recognise and honor the voluntary blood donors. This year, the theme is Safe Blood for All. This day is also the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, who received the Noble Prize for identifying blood groups and their types, which made blood transfusion a safer process.

SPS Hospital holds awareness talk

On this occasion, Dr Hitesh Narang, senior consultant and co-ordinater of Transfusion Medicine department of SPS Hospital said blood transfusion was an indispensable component of health care.

“It contributes to saving millions of lives each year in both routine and emergency situations, permits increasingly complex medical and surgical interventions and dramatically improves the life expectancy and quality of life of patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions. Patients who require transfusion as part of their clinical management have the right to expect that sufficient blood will be available to meet their needs and to receive the safest blood possible,” He said.

Donor felicitation ceremony at CMC

Speaking on the occasion, Dr William Bhatti, Director CMC, enlightened the gathered donors regarding the theme of this year’s World Blood Donor Day – “Safe Blood for All”— and dedicated the event to voluntary blood donors, actively participating in donating blood and also encouraged others to do so.

Furthering the Director’s message, Dr Bharti Uppal, Associate Medical Superintendent, said voluntary non remunerated blood donations form the backbone of safe blood supply for the patients in need.

Department of Transfusion Medicine, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), today celebrated World Donors Day.

According to Dr Amarjit Kaur (Professor and Head of Transfusion Medicine), the day is celebrated every year to promote the cause of voluntary blood donation among the public.

Dr Rajesh Kumar (Professor of Transfusion Medicine) appreciated the enthusiasm of volunteers including doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and others to donate blood voluntarily on this day. He stressed that the theme of the World Blood Donor’s Day is “Safe Blood for all. ”120 units of blood were collected during the camp

Fortis Hospital organises blood donation campaign

A blood donation drive was organised at Fortis Hospital here. It was a unique opportunity for the donors to donate their blood to save a life. The hospital staff and attendants were also motivated to donate blood, and help save a life. Dr Shally, Medical Superintendent, Fortis hospital, said donating blood could reveal potential health problems and it also lowers the risk of heart disease and cholesterol.

Blood donation camp at Hotel Hyatt Regency

Hotel’s general manager Manas Banerjee said, “June is our global month of community service. We encourage and motivate our associates to come forward and participate in the CSR activities.”
