Khanna, June 14

A pregnant woman, who was going to the local Civil Hospital Khanna in an auto-rickshaw, gave birth to a child on the roadside, allegedly due to the potholes dotting the Amloh-Khanna road.

The incident happened around 10.30 am near Kahanpura village. The auto driver fled the scene after dumping the woman on the roadside when she started to have severe labour pains. A passerby called Ambulance 108. The woman and her child were rushed to the Civil Hospital from where they were referred to Patiala.

The woman, a resident of Amloh, along with her husband, was going to the Civil Hospital for a pregnancy check-up. Bumpy ride on the potholed Amloh-Khanna road triggered labour pains. When labour pains became unbearable, she asked the auto driver to stop the vehicle.

The auto driver fled the spot, leaving the woman lying on a piece of cloth on the roadside. Someone informed the 108 Ambulance service. An ambulance reached there and the staff helped the woman to give birth to a girl child.

The woman and her child were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Khanna, from where they were referred to Patiala as the child was underweight. Khanna SMO Rajinder Gulati said the delivery happened before time. They were referred to Patiala as the premature child needed intensive care.
