Ministers skip Question Hour; Ansari unhappy

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 20

An “extraordinary situation” was witnessed in the Rajya Sabha today when three union ministers to whom queries were addressed went missing in the Question Hour, leading to Chairman M Hamid Ansari expressing anguish and inviting jeers from the Opposition.

A few minutes before the Question Hour was to end, Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan answered questions pertaining to the Water Resources Ministry and Ansari moved to the next question — this one to the Ministry of Shipping whether the government was launching a Yamuna Water Taxi Project.

However, neither the questioner nor the minister concerned were present, prompting Ansari to observe it as an “extraordinary situation”. As he took up the next question relating to the Environment Ministry, again there was no one from the Treasury benches to answer it.

“This is the shape of the things to come,” said Opposition leaders. Ansari moved to the next question relating to the Ministry of Power, which too went unanswered as the minister concerned was not present to answer it, prompting him to say — “This is not a happy state of affairs.”
