Bathinda murders: ‘Tantrik’ surrenders

Tribune News Service

Kotfatta (Bathinda), March 20

Lakhwinder Singh Lakhi, a tantrik who allegedly helped a woman and her son kill her two grandchildren in an apparent bid to exorcise evil spirits, surrendered at the Kotfatta police station today. A Talwandi Sabo court remanded him in one-day police custody.

Nirmal Kaur and her son Kulwinder Singh had been arrested on March 8 on the charge of torturing his children, Ranjot (5) and Anamika (3), to death at Kotfatta village.

Village residents had staged protests against the police and blocked a road yesterday, demanding Lakhi’s arrest.

ASI Darshan Singh said Lakhi had pleaded not guilty. A case was registered against him under Section 120B of the IPC. The ASI further said: “Although Lakhi was not present at the scene of the crime, he is accused of conspiring with Nirmal and Kulwinder. The mother-son duo had met Lakhi at his residence in Kalianwali village. He gave them ‘prasad’ and made them believe that the children were responsible for the family’s misfortune.”

“On having the ‘prasad’, Nirmal and Kulwinder became intoxicated and fatally tortured the kids,” the ASI added.
