Delayed sowing has hit farmers hard: Sukhbir

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 6

Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal on Tuesday claimed that paddy growers in the state were a harassed lot. “They are either forced to wait endlessly in mandis to sell their produce or make a distress sale. This is the result of the faulty policy of the government, which had delayed the sowing of paddy just to save power,” he said.

Sukhbir dubbed the move of delayed sowing as “penny wise and pound foolish that has worsened the farm crisis”. “Field reports have revealed that the delayed sowing has twin effect on paddy production. On one hand, the yield is reduced by 15-20 per cent and on the other, the moisture content in the grain rose up to 23 per cent, he alleged.
