A major fire engulfed forests in the Thappal area here today. The fire erupted this afternoon and it spread to a large area covering nearly 100 acres by the evening.

Workers of the forest and fire departments were trying to douse the flames.

Wildlife official Surjit Singh said beside flora and fauna, reptiles, wild animals and birds might have been perished. The forest has a large number of khair and paper mulberry trees. Rabbits, python, monitor lizard and partridges are found in large number in these forests. Range officer Anil Kumar Sharma said strong winds in area had aggravated the situation. — TNS
