Batala, March 20

Former Congress MLA Ashwani Sekhri today allegedly refused to return his official vehicle when an official of the State Transport Commission (STC) went to his residence to take the car back to Chandigarh.

Sekhri is a three-time MLA and AICC secretary. In the recent elections, he had lost to SAD candidate Lakhvir Singh Lodhinangal by 465 votes.

Vehicles to sitting MLAs are allotted by the ministers’ car section of the STC. Most of the defeated legislators have already returned their official cars.

During his term as MLA (2012-17), Sekhri was given an Innova. Today, his official driver, Gurmukh Singh, was asked to bring the vehicle back to Chandigarh.

Denying the allegations, Sekhri said: “I have more than 10 vehicles with me. Why would I retain the official car? I will return it when I receive written orders from the STC office.”

He claimed that he had neither received any letter nor phone call in this regard. Sources said officials of the STC had been calling up Sekhri’s office, asking him to return the vehicle as they wanted to allot it to a newly elected legislator.
