India beat WI by 5 runs, take 4-0 lead

Instagram post earns ban for Oz Emily Smith

  • MELBOURNE: Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Emily Smith has been suspended for a year for posting the Women’s Big Bash League team’s line-up on social media an hour before its scheduled release. The ban, nine months of which are suspended, will rule the 24-year-old out of the remainder of the WBBL and the women’s national cricket league, which is played in the 50-overs format. Smith posted the Hurricanes’ team line-up for their November 2 match in the WBBL against Sydney Thunder at Burnie on her Instagram account about an hour before it was permitted. The match was later abandoned due to bad weather. Cricket Australia said its anti-corruption code prohibits sharing of insider information which could be used for betting. The board acknowledged that Smith had no intention to breach the code but there was no excuse for the mistake. — Reuters

The series already in their pocket, the Indian women continued their domination over the West Indies women by notching up a five-run win in the rain-truncated fourth T20I.

The Indian women now lead the five-match series 4-0 after sealing the series in the third game.

In the rain-marred fourth T20I, which was reduced to nine overs a side, the Indian women made 50/7 after being sent in to bat. Pooja Vastrakar (10) was the lone Indian to reach double digits. Hayley Matthews (3/13) scalped three wickets for the hosts, while Afy Fletcher (2/2) and Sheneta Grimmond (2/10) picked up two wickets apiece. India then restricted West Indies to 45/5 in their nine overs.

Spinners rule

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur relied on her spinners and they did not disappoint her as off-spinner Anuja Patil (2/8), Deepti Sharma (1/8) and Radha Yadav (1/8) kept the Windies on a tight leash to ensure the win.

Mathews (11) and Chinelle Henry (11) top-scored for the home team. The fifth and final T20I of the series will be played here on Thursday.

The India women had defeated West Indies 2-1 in the three-match ODI series that preceded the T20Is.

Brief Scores: India: 50/7 in 9 overs (Pooja Vastrakar 10; Hayley Matthews 3/13); West Indies: 45/5 in 9 overs (Hayley Matthews 11, Chinelle Henry 11; Anuja Patil 2/8). — PTI
