Who Embarrasses the Government?

LAHORE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 1918.

DO those Anglo-Indian journals which, in the present supreme crisis in the life of the Empire, have been seeking to widen the gulf between themselves and those represented by them on the one hand and the educated community and its leaders on the other honestly believe that they are serving the best interests of the Empire? The Pioneer, for instance, wrote in a recent issue:-"As we have often pointed out, the strongest evidence of the present unfitness of Indians for self-government is to be found in the speeches made by Indian politicians." Again:-"The lack of any sense of responsibility is the most conspicuous failing of Indian politicians." It is easy to collect similar gems from leading articles in almost every Anglo-Indian journal of the extremist school in every part of the country.
