Encourage cultivation of walnut: Minister

Subodh Uniyal, Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture of the state, yesterday asked officials to prepare a proposal for encouraging the cultivation of walnuts and other nuts in the state.

During a meeting with members of the association of Walnut and other nuts growers, Uniyal said along with exploring avenues for enhancing the cultivation and production of walnuts and other nuts, Horticulture University in Bursar had been asked to undertake research in this area.

The minister said an advisory board of experts would be set up to give advice to the government on feasibility aspects of fruits, nuts and crops.

Further, keep away wild animals from attacking crops and orchards. The Department of Horticulture will seek opinion from experts on the matter.

Uniyal said Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh had agreed in principle for the setting up of two agriculture universities in Uttarakhand.
